Y’know, just your average Thursday morning when you work with the most amazing people on the most crazy things. Like a 27000-year astronomical clock and orrery up through Saturn, including major moons on each planet.
The 4-foot brass disc is still in the works, had to get a goddamn shipyard to source the brass, and find a genius in Wisconsin who can mill the detail, ink, and finish the metal, and ship it back intact.
It’s... not Bezos-level, but it’s as close as I’ve got at the moment.

Does it account for moon movement? Like how our Moon is slowly moving away?

I hope the gears don’t drift over the lifespan, but I can’t account for metal wear.

Would be cool if there was a way to drop in spacers over time to account for planetary drift

Well... give it a few years, we’ll see how much the teeth in the gears wears down, I guess. I mean, it’s only meant to last like 16,000 years.
We’ll see.

This kind of thing is so aspirational that for a fleeting moment, humanity doesn’t seem so bad.

It’s a total fuck-you-money kinda project. But it’s 100% good-hearted. Super nerd, nerding out, and actually making something real.

It’s a chance to reach out and touch the distant future in a way few ever do.

I can’t help but think of the clockwork droids from “ The Girl in the Fireplace ” whenever I see gears like that.
“Oh, you are beautiful! No really, you are, you’re gorgeous! Space-age clockwork, I love it, I’ve got chills! Listen, I mean this from the heart- and by the way, count those- it would be a crime, it would be an act of vandalism to disassemble you. But that won’t stop me.”
